FAIRMOUNT ANIMAL HOSPITAL'S
RECOMMENDED YEARLY VACCINES FOR THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA:


 

Please note that all vaccines are optional (except for rabies vaccine).
NOT every pet needs every vaccines.
Upon physical evaluation of your pet and discussion with your veterinarian, a protocol specific
to your pet and/or your needs will be designed.



 

Definitions:

A
 "core vaccine" is a vaccine against a disease that pose a substantial risk in dogs and cats and widely distributed in the United States/ World)

 

major "noncore vaccine" is a vaccine against a disease that pose a substantial risk in dogs and cats and is distributed within a particular locality (i.e. state, county) in the United States.

 

minor "noncore vaccine" is a vaccine against a disease that pose a risk in dogs and cats, is distributed within a particular locality (i.e. state, county) in the United States, and must address particular need of the client/pet lifestyle).

 

DOGS:

REQUIRED VACCINES:

 

Rabies(Required by Phila. Law): ( zoonotic disease) Note that a rabies vaccination certification from a veterinarian and a dog license is needed to legaly own a dog in Philadelphia.

 

ELECTIVE CANINE HEALTH PREVENTION VACCINES:



MAJOR CORE (international) VACCINES:


A new adult dog >1year with unknown or questionable vaccination history (without vaccine records) may not be vaccinated and should be boosted at least once after an initial set of these vaccines.

Puppies or non-vaccinated adult dog should be vaccinated 3 times, at 1 month apart, with a set of these vaccines, in order for their immune system to reach high protection level.


Parvovirus:  (Very important yearly vaccine for dogs living in a large city like Philadelphia.  Parvoviral disease causes severe bloody diarrhea that can be deadly to dogs and is highly contagious to other unvaccinated dogs.)

Distemper

Hepatitis Adenovirus Type 2
 




MAJOR NONCORE (Local) VACCINES:
 (recommended for Fairmount Park area).
 

Lyme ( zoonotic disease) ("Recommended for use in dogs living in or visiting regions where the risk of tick exposure is considered high, or disease is known to be endemic" American Animal Hospital Association Vaccination Guidelines).

Leptospirosis: ( zoonotic disease) reported in Philadelphia county/ Fairmount area)

Bordetella: (Every six months in high-risk environments according to the American Animal Hospital Association guidelines) - Required for pet grooming and boarding. (Similar to human whooping cough)



MINOR NONCORE (Local) VACCINES: (recommended on a case to case basis)

Coronavirus ( i.e.: K9-Cov):
We are now all familiar with Coronaviruses. This is the dog version. Vaccination should be done at an early age as younger dogs are the most suceptible 

Parainfluenza(recommended if the animal is being boarded or going regularly to a dog park where parainfluenza is at a high risk.)

Note: By vaccinating your dog with both core and non-core vaccines you will provide your pet with a maximum protection against most common diseases.

Giardia Testing (***The vaccine is no longer available.) Giardia testing is recommended. Fairmount Animal hospital recommends testing all pets once a year. The disease can be transmitted to owners. Owners that are of advance age or immunocompromised in anyway (i.e. owners that have crohn's disease, Aids, or are under any kind of treatment that may compromise their immune system in anyway such as on steroid therapy, immunosupressive medication etc...).

 

B. CATS:

REQUIRED VACCINE:

 Rabies (Required by Phila. Law)

ELECTIVE FELINE HEALTH PREVENTION VACCINES:


MAJOR CORE (international) VACCINES:

 

Rhinotracheitis: Very important vaccine for cats living in a large city like Philadelphia. Shelter cats are unusually predisposed to the disease.

Panleukopenia

Calicivirus

Leukemia (this is a core vaccine for outdoor and semi-outdoor cats. Cats should be tested negative prior to vaccination)



MAJOR NONCORE (Local) ELECTIVE VACCINES
: (recommended for Fairmount Park area.

Chlamidia ( zoonotic disease)

Leukemia

 

MINOR NONCORE (Local) ELECTIVE VACCINES:
 (recommended on a case to case basis)
 

Feline Bordetella  (Older pets, multicats household, cats that are boarded and groomed, outside cats)

Virulent strain of Calicivirus

F.I.P. (Feline infectious peritonitis, for multicats household (more than 2 cats))
